China ocean freight spikes in May 2026: Shanghai index up 70% from February lows

Kisun Shipping reported on 29 May 2026 that the Shanghai Containerized Freight Index reached 2,218 points, 70% above its February 2026 lows. Per 40HQ from China it quoted US West Coast at $3,332 (+21.3%), Northern Europe $2,800 (+24.4%), US East Coast $5,800 to $6,000 (+15.7%) and Mediterranean/Red Sea $5,500 (+83%).

It cites detours that add 10 to 14 sailing days and cut effective capacity by 15 to 20%, an early peak season, a 69% year-on-year jump in very-low-sulfur fuel oil passed on through bunker adjustment factors and peak season surcharges of $500 to $2,000 per container, and strategic blank sailings. It expected elevated rates through June and July with possible easing after August.
